Laurel Park lauds Rapid Redux

Rapid Redux improved his record-breaking run to 22 wins in a row at Laurel Park on Wednesday.  The David Wells-trained chestnut led all the way for a three-quarter length victory in a 1600m allowance event.

He equalled the previous record of 19 straight wins held by Zenyatta on October 27 and then broke the record at Mountaineer Park on November 21.  He made it 21 at Laurel Park on December 13.

Rapid Redux (6g Pleasantly Perfect – Thiscatsforcaryl by Storm Cat) was claimed by owner Robert Cole for $6,250 in October 2010.  “He has been placed really well,” trainer David Wells said.  “He is not a stakes horse.  People want us to try it but he is not that quality.”

Rapid Redux has won races at seven different tracks at distances ranging from 1000m to 1800m using seven riders during the streak.

“The math is unbelievable when you think about it,” Cole enthused.  “It is tough to win this many in a row.  The durability is his greatest trait.  He will keep running as long as he’s healthy.”

Rapid Redux had earned a Special Eclipse Award and a trip to Beverly Hills for Baltimore born Cole.  “Being a local it is fun winning in front of the home crowd,” he said at Laurel.  “I was a bettor for years before I was an owner.  I know the people here and it is fun to win with my friends.”

Rapid Redux is also a Vox Populi Award finalist which honours extraordinary service to thoroughbred racing.  The brainchild of Secretariat’s owner Penny Chenery, Rapid Redux is one of four finalists along with Goldikova, Havre de Grace and Uncle Mo.
