Caulfield trainer Colin Little is looking forward to the spring with his unbeaten Turffontein filly Safariann.
Turffontein sired Fontein Ruby to win last year’s G2 Edward Manifold Stakes and Little would love to get to a similar level in the spring. “I think we could aim at something a bit better at the carnival,” he said after Safariann’s last-start victory. “She’s a nice filly and there’s still some improvement in her.”
Safariann (2f Turffontein – Philliann by Bellotto) won on debut at Geelong before nailing Godolphin favourite Alucinari in the Think Big Stud Hcp (1200m) at Moonee Valley on June 6. “It was a big step to win again on a quick back up,” Little added. “We were always going to send her to the paddock, win lose or draw, after two starts.”
Turffontein stands at Blue Gum Farm and he’s upgraded the winner’s pedigree with the promise of black-type next season. There are no stakes winners under her first three dams!
Safariann was sold by Riverside Stud for $15,000 at the 2014 Adelaide Magic Millions and she has now earned $84,300 including VOBIS incentives of $27,300 for a syndicate made up of Nathan Barry, Joanne Burns, Chris Fox, Andrew Gemmell, Chris Hanlon, Chris Malkovic and Adrian Ryan.
Turffontein is high-balling among the top tier of Australia’s second-season sires with earnings over $1.86 million. Blue Gum Farm stands him for an $11,000 (inc gst) service fee.
