Lil Kim’s longshot win at Belmont on Wednesday was just the ticket for Paige Kenney.
The Lark Hill trainer is on the mend after breaking an ankle last month and owning a share of the filly would have also helped the healing process.
Lil Kim (3f Heritage – Lil Elsa by Lion Hunter) is raced by Kenney and Yarradale Stud owner Ron Sayers. She kicked away to win the Westspeed Hcp (1400m) by a length at her fourth run after a year on the sidelines.
“We had no luck from a wide barrier last time,” winning jockey Takahide Ikenushi said. “We were in a better spot today and she was just too good for them.”
Heritage (Flying Spur) has bobbed up with several smart types since the start of the Belmont season. His speedball Woken won for Lindsey Smith and stablemate Flying Time completed a hat-trick on June 21.
His promising three year-old Lost Heritage is out spelling after an Ascot victory and a fourth in the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy.
Lil Kim has a 2yo half-sister named Lil Sis (De Troy) in training with Kenney – she was placed in two Belmont barrier trials in May. Their dam Lil Elsa won 5 Sydney sprints and was stakes -placed in the LR Millie Fox Stakes.
The mare has a 100% record at stud. She has also foaled local winners Elsa’s Girl (Mossman) and Credo (Scandal Keeper). Her latest is yearling colt by War Chant and she was bred back to Musket last year.
Belmont’s midweek meeting produced another two winners – Benito and Big Jack – with links to Yarradale Stud. Benito has a weanling half-brother by War Chant while Big Jack’s dam is expecting a Discorsi foal in September.
Heritage will stand at Yarradale Stud for a $3,300 (service fee) this year.
