Magic Millions feature-treble for Vinery

Queensland cult hero Buffering kicked off a feature-race treble for Vinery sires at the $10 million Magic Millions meeting on Saturday.

The veteran son of Vinery stallion Mossman started a $1.20 favourite and was several classes above his rivals in the $1 million Magic Millions QTIS Open Plate (1300m).

Fellow Vinery sire Husson chimed with a running double later in the day with Victorian visitors Lucky Hussler ($1 million Magic Millions Cup) and Husson Eagle ($1 million Magic Millions Sprint).

But it was local champion Buffering who fired up the capacity crowd on the Gold Coast.  He jumped straight to the front and cruised home under a hands-and-heels ride from Damian Browne.

“If we had lost today the owners would probably have sacked me,” joked trainer Rob Heathcote.  “It’s an enormous relief and gives me a lot of pride to showcase him on home turf here in Queensland.”

Buffering (8g Mossman – Action Annie by Anabaa) is the most successful Magic Millions graduate of all time.  He has banked over $6 million after changing hands for just $22,000 as a yearling at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

“The sales are on across the road at the moment and we’ve had a magic ride with this bloke,” Heathcote added.  “If you want to share the dream – get into a racehorse.”

Heathcote said Buffering would now head overseas for the G1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m) at the Dubai World Cup meeting in March.  “The Hong Kong Chairman’s Sprint in May is also an option and then we can head to the Melbourne spring carnival before coming back here again next year.  Why not?”

The Melbourne Cup winning combination of Darren Weir and Michelle Payne teamed up to give Vinery resident Husson his most successful day as a stallion on the Gold Coast.

Weir trained Lucky Hussler to a brilliant victory in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) and Payne piloted Husson Eagle to a record-breaking win in the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m).

Their combined prizemoney totalled more than $1.20 million.

Lucky Hussler settled midfield on the fence under Glen Boss before railing up to collar the leader Strawberry Boy.  “He got a beautiful run and it was a cool ride by Glen,” Weir said.  “He was delayed in Melbourne this week after missing a flight but it didn’t affect the result.  He ran terrific.”

Husson Eagle closed out the multi-million dollar meeting with a dazzling turn of foot under Michelle Payne.  The Prime Thoroughbreds gelding ran a course-record 61.74s for 1100m in the Sprint.

“It’s great to ride a winner today, especially for my brother Patrick,” Payne said.  “This horse is a cheeky, little fella but he gives you everything.  You can’t ask for more than that.”
