Up-and-coming Caulfield trainer Nick Ryan has been rewarded for his patience with in-form galloper Mahamedeis.

It paid off in spades when the staying-son of Magnus won the Traralgon Cup (1900m) by seven lengths on December 2 and the Werribee Cup (2000m) off a seven-day break on Sunday.

Mahamedeis banked $120,000 last week for total earnings over a half-million dollars. He was a $24,000 buy for JJ Gordon Bloodstock (FBAA) at the 2016 Inglis VOBIS Gold yearling sale on behalf of Ryan and managing part-owner John Cole.

“He was as bright as a button all week and you wouldn’t know he had gone around at Traralgon,” Ryan revealed. “It’s the best he’s been all campaign and I just freshened him up at Mordialloc beach. He doesn’t need much work and was right to go again on Sunday.”

The stable flag-bearer will be given a short break before coming back in the New Year. Unraced at two, he won a Sale maiden second time out in December last year. “He’s starting to show his real talent now,” Ryan claimed at Werribee. “I was very confident coming here and Luke (Currie) took luck out of the equation.”

Bred by Yallambee Stud’s Christie Woodard, he’s out of a half-sister to Casual Pass (G1 Mackinnon Stakes). Second-dam Raami’s Magic (Raami) won a LR Tasmanian St Leger.

Ryan was Victorian champion jockey while still an apprentice in 2005 but weight cut his career short in 2009. Mahamedeis was his first city winner as a trainer at Flemington in January.

Jeff Gordon and Ryan had also combined to win with promising filly Spensierato (pictured) on debut at Pakenham last month. The Fiorente 3yo was bred by Narelle Bravington at Kedarona Stud and cost $45,000 at the 2017 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale.

Spensierato is out of Irish-bred mare Mustang Sally (Sadler’s Wells). She is an unraced half-sister to Royal Ascot Group 3 winner Membership and has foaled prior winners in South Africa, Victoria and WA.
