Exciting young sire Makfi recorded his first southern hemisphere winner with Marky Mark in the Mayfair Village 2YO (1100m) at Ellerslie on Sunday.
Marky Mark (2g Makfi – My My Maree by Testa Rossa) had a lovely run in transit and drew clear in the late stages to score by over a length from Untamed Diamond (Snitzel) and Electric Aura (Shocking). He is trained by Moira Murdoch for owner-breeders Brendon and Jo Lindsay.
My Maree was covered by Makfi in September 2011 and then ran a Group 2 placing at Te Rapa before retiring. She is a sister to G1 South Australian Derby winner Testafiable.
Makfi (GB) defeated Canford Cliffs, Dick Turpin and St Nicholas Abbey in the 2010 English 2000 Guineas and followed up with a victory over Goldikova and Paco Boy in the G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois.
The son of Dubawi retired to stand at Tweenhills Stud in 2011 and his first English bred runners this year include French Listed winner Cornwallville. In an arrangement with the Aga Khan Studs, he will move to Haras de Bonneval in Normandy next year.
Makfi shuttles to Westbury Stud in New Zealand for a fee of $17,500.
