Malavio breaks Tramway record at Randwick

Snitzel’s classy son Malavio has put up a career-best performance to claim the G3 Tramway Stakes (1400m) in record time at Randwick.

Malavio defeated Bello by a short-head and they were followed in by Group 1 winners Royal Descent, Sacred Falls and Sizzling.  “He had to do a little bit of work from the outside alley but he’s got plenty of ticker,” trainer Steve Englebrecht said.  “He might be an Epsom horse.”

Englebrecht will set him for the Epsom Hcp on October 6 via the LR Bill Ritchie Hcp at Randwick on September 21.  “I’ve had a pretty lean trot over the last few years,” he said.  “It’s good to get a nice horse back in the stable.”

A homebred for Ottavo Galletta, Malavio has won 9 races from 21 starts for earnings of more than $400,000.  His dam Win Here Win There (Dehere) is from the family of Group 1 winner True Version and she has a yearling filly by Snitzel and is due to foal again to him next month.

Malavio clocked a race record 1.21.37s for the Tramway.  He is among 15 stakes winners by Arrowfield Stud sire Snitzel having won the Civic Stakes and Festival Stakes at Listed level last year.

Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) is covering his eighth book at Arrowfield and his fee has risen to $49,500 (inc gst) this year.  The decision to increase the asking price was made after his yearlings averaged $335,000 for 10 lots sold at the 2013 Inglis Easter yearling sale.
