Topper’s Halo helped owner Bill Biggs celebrate his 70th birthday on Saturday with a storming victory in the Crown Perth Hcp (1400m) at Belmont.
Biggs and fellow part-owner Terry Mason purchased Topper’s Halo for $27,500 from Mungrup Stud at the 2011 Perth Magic Millions. Since returning from a 33 week spell in July, he has won 3 races in 5 starts for earnings of $90,000.
Topper’s Halo (4g Danehill Express – Halo No by Don’t Say Halo) came from well off the pace to overhaul Closing Time (Patronize) and Hans Up (Hurricane Sky). “He’s in a real purple patch of form,” co-trainer Dion Luciani said. “He won off a week’s break today and is looking for 1600m now.”
Biggs was on hand to share the win with friends and relations from Perth and the Goldfields where the family name is synonymous with racing. “This horse is paying his way and the boys have done a good job,” he said. “It thought it was a bit of a coincidence that he was in today but they must have known more than me!”
Mungrup Stud champion Danehill Express is off to another flyer after a record-breaking premiership last season. His Ascot based gelding Zedspiel was a very impressive winner at Belmont last Wednesday.
Danehill Express (Danehill) sired 30 individual winners in 2012-13 to create a new record for a Sunspeed-based second-season sire. Those figures elevated him to the Top 5 on the Australian ladder and he also sired another two winners in Singapore.
Mungrup stands Danehill Express (Danehill) for an $8,800 (inc gst) service fee.
