More Stars for Makin at Tattersalls Mare Sale

Paul Makin topped Day 2 of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale on Tuesday when he paid 1.7 million gns (AUD 3.21 million) for regally bred filly Song.  The Australian breeder outbid several agents from either side of the Atlantic to buy the unraced three year-old filly by Sadler’s Wells.

Makin started the December Sale on a high last Monday (Nov 23) when he was the vendor of a session-topping Galileo filly that made 275,000gns (AUD 523,000).

Star Witness made it a week to remember when he became the first Australian winner for Makin’s headline horse Starcraft at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Song is a sister to Irish 1000 Guineas winner Yesterday and was offered in foal to Danehill Dancer.  “I just wanted to get into the family,” Makin said.  “She was the nicest mare I saw and will go to Ireland to be covered by Sea The Stars.”

Song was consigned by Richard Henry whose Primus Advertising handles Coolmore’s marketing.  He bought her dam Jude at the 1997 Tattersalls December Sale when offered by Fahd Salman.  Jude will visit Galileo in 2010.

Danehill mare Massarra, a three-quarter sister to Invincible Spirit, was purchased by M V Magnier for 600,000gns (AUD 1.13).  She was sold in foal to Galileo and will most likely return to him next year.

Prix Saint-Alary winner Ask For The Moon is also likely to be in Galileo’s 2010 book.  She made 410,000gns (AUD 776,380) when sold in foal to Holy Roman Emperor yesterday.  Her colt on the ground by the Coolmore sire topped Tattersalls Foal Sale last week at 400,000gns (AUD 757,445).

“She was a great looking young mare and she had the best foal in the sale last week,” new owner Eddie Fitzpatrick said.  “She will go back to Galileo on the strength of the foal.”

Andrew Tinkler has been active at the sales this year and his shopping list included Listed Ayr winner Sugar Free at 540,000gns (AUD 1.02 million) yesterday.  “She will race on next season and it would be nice to get a bit more black type under her name,” Tinkler said.  “We would love to send her to Sea The Stars.”

Recent Italian Group 1 winner Eva’s Request is heading across the Atlantic after selling for 525,000gns (AUD 994,145) to agent Hugo Lascelles.  She will going to Smart Strike.

The owners of 2007 English Derby winner Authorized – Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar – paid 420,000gns (AUD 795,315) for Dashing who was sold in foal to Danehill Dancer.  She is a half-sister to G1 winning mare Alexander Goldrun and one-time Australian shuttler Medicis whose sole crop down here includes Brisbane stakes winner One Lickety Split.

Agent Michael Goodbody bought two mares for a mystery Australian breeder.  Newbury Listed winner Fermion, offered in foal to Dylan Thomas, made 380,000gns (AUD 719,570).  The Sadler’s Wells mare is out of a half-sister to Groom Dancer.

Goodbody also paid 320,000gns (AUD 605,955) for Pivotal’s German G3 winner Chantilly Tiffany.  “They have been bought for a man coming into the business who wants to buy at the top end of the market,” Goodbody said.  “Chantilly Tiffany will be covered here to southern hemisphere time.
