Mountain Magic at Toowoomba

Clear Mountain Fairview sires Zaha and Tycoon Ruler dominated the $100,000 Magic Millions 2YO Plate (1100m) at Toowoomba on Friday.  Zaha filly Tough Luck led them up and, after being challenged by Tycoon Cat at the top of the straight, streaked clear to score by nearly four lengths.

Tough Luck (2f Zaha – Gudwill by Will Dancer) will now be set for the $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in January by trainer Robert Bradshaw.  She had won at Sunshine Coast a week before boosting her bank account to $80,500 at Clifford Park.

Tough Luck was a cheap $9,000 buy at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions QTIS 600 yearling sale in March.  “She’s qualified for the Magic Millions now – so we will definitely head there,” Bradshaw predicted.  “She can still improve a bit.”

Zaha (Kingmambo) sired Tough Luck from Ipswich juvenile winner Gudwill.  Second dam Gielbay (Gielgud) is a half-sister to Listed SAJC Fulham Park Plate winners Runaway Knight (Always Welcome) and Satellite Bay (Don’t Say Halo).  Another half-sister Kiss A Halo is the dam of G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Undoubtedly (Redoute’s Choice).

Gudwill has had five to the races for five winners – Merry Pierce (Pierce Arrow), Ozjuria (Danasuria), Stefenick (Pierce Arrow) and Dash’s Princess (Danachenka) prior to Tough Luck.  She has a yearling colt by Outback Prince who has been catalogued for the 2010 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Sale.

Tycoon Cat (2g Tycoon Ruler – La Catalina by Catrail) started favourite at Toowoomba and was far from disgraced on debut.  He is a Clear Mountain Fairview homebred for owners Bob and Marie Frappell.

Tycoon Ruler is a son of Last Tycoon and won sprints as winter two year-old at Flemington and Moonee Valley.  He didn’t salute as a three year-old but was runner-up to Delago Brom (MRC Caulfield Guineas-G1), to Titanic Jack (MVRC Alister Clarke St-G2) and to Yell (C.S. Hayes St-G3).

Returning at four, he was a Listed winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes and John Adams Stakes at Caulfield before retiring to Clear Mountain Fairview.  Her served 168 in his first two seasons but that dropped to a book of just 38 when E.I. struck in 2007.

The Frappells have an Outback Prince – La Catalina half sister to Tycoon Cat and will offer the filly at the QTIS 600 yearling sale in March.

The Toowoomba support card also saw Zaha and Tycoon Ruler among the winners.  Son Of Zaha (5g Zaha  – Ena’s Way by Nijinsky’s Way) won the opening event over 2100m and might make a handy stayer.  He took 16 starts to break through but then doubled up for wins in Maiden and Class 2 company within a fortnight.

Tycoon’s Pride (3g Tycoon Ruler – Proud by Buck’s Pride) won the final event on the Toowoomba card by over four lengths.  His dam won the 2001 2YO Minibowl Quality at Eagle Farm and had already thrown the Zaha winners Proud Zaha and Zahas Pride.

Zaha has now sired 26 Australian bred winners at a 45% strike rate.  Tycoon Ruler has had 18 starters from his first crop to race so far for 9 winners.
