Oratorio winning with Waratah’s Secret

Perth has produced sprinters the calibre of Miss Andretti, Scenic Blast and Hay List in recent years and the latest star on the horizon out west is Waratah’s Secret.

Waratah’s Secret (4g Oratorio – Blissfully by Zabeel) has built up an imposing record that started with a six length win on debut at Belmont Park in August 2009.  His scorecard now stands at 11: 7-3-0 after another eye-catching victory in the G3 Prince of Wales Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on Saturday.

The David Harrison trained gelding tracked the speed before coming with a sizzling sprint to win effortlessly from Idyllic Prince (Scenic) and For Your Eyes Only (Bletchley Park).

“It was a brilliant win and a great ride by Paul Harvey,” Harrison said.  “That was definitely his acid test with and he’s come through with flying colours.”

Harrison purchased Waratah’s Secret for $43,000 from Mungrup Stud at the 2008 Perth Magic Millions yearling sale.  He has earned $321,750 and there’s more cash coming in the $125,000 Colonel Reeves Stakes on November 13 and $750,000 Winterbottom Stakes on November 27.

His only failure to date was in last year’s Winterbottom won by Ortensia.

Waratah’s Secret is from a half-sister to Flemington stakes winner Perfect Evening (Imposing).  Second dam Bliss (Kaoru Star) is a half-sister to G1 winning racehorse and sire Blazing Saddles.

His sire Oratorio (Stravinsky) was a precocious individual winning the Tommy Smith Slipper (LR) at Doomben and the Adelaide Magic Millions at Morphettville before training on at three to claim the C S Hayes Stakes (G3) at Moonee Valley.

Oratorio has sired 30 winners of 67 races with his first two crops including the stakes performers Motion Pictures, Clueless Angel and Gold Rocks
That success has seen Mungrup Stud’s Gray Williamson increase his service fee from $6,050 in 2005 to $33,000 this year.

The Prince Of Wales completed an Ascot double for Oratorio.  His daughter Hot Tamale clocked up her fifth win earlier on the programme in the Westspeed 3yo Hcp.
