O’Reilly colt tops NZ 2YO Sale

A strapping O’Reilly colt set a new record price for NZ Bloodstock’s South Island 2YO Sale when making NZ$220,000 at the Canterbury Agricultural Park on Friday.

Parading as Lot 165, the sale-topper was sold on account of Berkley Stud to NZ Bloodstock (as agent) after a bidding duel with Victorian trainers Fran Houlahan and Brian Johnston.  He is out of Waikiki Star mare Miami who has produced four to race for four winners.

The price also contributed to Berley owners Edwina Morris and Alan Jones topping the sale for the sixth time as the leading vendor.  They sold 14 horses for total takings of $344,000.

Queensland agent John Foote was the day’s leading purchaser with five lots for $141,000.  His highest priced lot was the Yamanin Vital – Joe Leigh (Personal Escort) colt that realised $46,000.

NZ Bloodstock reported the 2YO average fell from $13,268 down to $11,994.  The clearance rate dropped four points to 71%.
