Payne doubles up with Florentina

David Payne prepared his second Redoute’s Choice stakes winner in as many months when Florentina scored a first-up victory in the G3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) on Saturday.

Payne had trained Redoute’s Choice stallion Master Of Design to a farewell victory in the G1 T J Smith Stakes at Randwick on April 14.

Florentina (3f Redoute’s Choice     – Celebria by Peintre Celebre) had been placed in the G3 Silver Shadow Stakes, G2 Furious Stakes and G2 Tea Rose Stakes during the spring carnival but had been sidelined since then while recovering from throat surgery.

“She has any amount of natural ability,” Payne said as Glyn Schofield brought the winner back to scale.  “I’m certain she can pick up another black type race here in Queensland.”

Florentina is a homebred for John and Deborah Camilleri and she is a half-sister to G1 Railway Stakes winner Gathering (Tale of the Cat).  Their dam Celebria also has a Redoute’s Choice filly that made $450,000 to the bid of Segenhoe Thoroughbreds at the Inglis Easter yearling sale last month.

Champion Arrowfield sire Redoute’s Choice and Celebria share Dancing Show (Nijinsky) as their second dam.

Redoute’s Choice kept his stakes-winner count ticking over to 89 on Saturday.  His current season total of 17 stakes winners is only one shy of his personal best in 2010-11.

Redoute’s Choice will stand the 2012 season for a fee of $137,500 (inc. gst) at Arrowfield Stud.
