Pendragon Peaking in Hong Kong

Think Big Stud sire Pendragon has opened his off-shore account with The Peak in Hong Kong.

The Peak (3g Pendragon – Cavita by Cadeaux Genereux) won the Hok Yuen Hcp on debut at Sha Tin last Sunday.  He is trained by John Size for owner Tan Boon Seng and scored by a neck and a neck over Sudden Thunder (Commands) and Real General (King’s Chapel).

Pendragon has sired five other winners in Australia starting with the Bart Cummings trained filly Yurrapendi at Newcastle in October.

The Peak showed all the attributes of a performer who will make his mark in Hong Kong.  Settled right behind the leaders by champion jockey Douglas Whyte, he took over in the straight and then held more seasoned rivals at bay.

“The horse has come a long way since I first sat on him,” Whyte told the South China Morning Post.  “He was small but has furnished physically and even more mentally.  I could have led, but he was just as happy sitting in third or fourth.

“He found a rhythm and also showed courage when the second horse came to beat him.  It will be a bigger task next time but he’s with the right man to keep progressing.”

The Peak is a younger half-brother to Sydney winner Kim Divine (God’s Own).   Their dam Cavita is from the family of Champion Irish mare Kastoria (Selkirk) and she has yearling colt by Thing Big sire Prince Arthur.

Pendragon (NZ) was raced by Think Big’s Dato Tan Chin Nam and he was runner-up to Racing To Win at two before returning to win at G3 level in the STC Gloaming Stakes and MRC Norman Robinson Stakes as a spring three year-old.  He bowed out of racing with a G1 fourth to Benicio in the 2005 Victoria Derby.

Pendragon is a son of Danzig’s champion sprinter Elnadim out of NZ G1 Oaks winner Alacrity.  He stands for an $8,800 (inc gst) fee at Think Big Stud which is situated near Bowral in NSW.

The Hong Kong result clinched a weekend double for Think Big.  Street Cry gelding Liveandletdie won the first leg in the Heron Bridge Handicap at Flemington on Saturday.

Liveandletdie carries the same silks as G1 winners Shocking and Whobegotyou and he holds a G1 nomination for the VRC Newmarket Hcp in March.  The Mark Kavangh trained gelding was racing first-up since a Listed victory in the VRC Creswick Stakes last June.

Think Big sold Liveandletdie to Laurence Eales for $58,000 at the 2009 Inglis Classic yearling sale.
