Sydney’s super colt Pierro has confirmed his standing as the best three year-old in Australia with a consummate victory in the G2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.
It was a very encouraging dress-rehearsal for the $3 million Cox Plate back at Moonee Valley on October 27.
Pierro (3c Lonhro – (Miss) Right Note by Daylami) started a $1.06 favourite and cruised to a four length win . “It was just a galloping lesson,” trainer Gai Waterhouse told AAP. “We’re very privileged to see a colt as good as this. He’s Australasia’s best colt by so far it’s not funny.”
Pierro completed the G1 Golden Slipper / 2YO Triple Crown and has come back better than ever. Bookmakers trimmed him into $3.80 favouritism for the G1 Cox Plate (2040m).
A Darley bred colt, Pierro was originally purchased as a foal by Victorian based breeder David Kobritz for $115,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions National weanling sale. He re-offered the colt at the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale when Waterhouse bought him for $230,000.
“Pierro was a standout on my rounds before the sales,” Waterhouse recalled. “He’s such a strong, masculine and tough looking colt. He was on our short list from day dot and I picked him out for Greg and Donna Kolivos.”
His dam (Miss) Right Note (Ire) won at Chantilly for owner-breeders Gainsborough Stud before transferring to Australia where she raced under the Darley banner. That was a couple of years before Sheikh Mohammed bought Woodlands. She was trained out here by Guy Walter and won at Randwick’s Kensington course.
(Miss) Right Note has a yearling filly by Lonhro. She’s a grey and will be retained by Darley.
