Waikato Stud resident Pins is going better than ever this season and the winning run continued with Lucha Libre (NZ) in the Listed South Pacific Classic at Randwick on Saturday.
Lucha Libre (3f Pins – Libre by Grosvenor) is trained by Anthony Cummings and she was racing for just the second time after winning a Wyong maiden last month. She scored by a short half-head and survived a protest from connections of runner-up Levi’s Choice.
“I think she will be much better as a four-year-old up over a distance,” Cummings said. “She is by Pins who I haven’t had a lot to do with but I might in the future. And she is out of a Grosvenor mare and gives every indication she will stay.”
Pins has been represented by 98 winners of 127 races in Australia & New Zealand so far this season. And he sired Ambitious Dragon to win the G1 Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin in March.
Lucha Libre (NZ) is his eighth stakes winner in 2010-11. A $45,000 buy for Cummings from Ardsley Stud at the 2009 NZB Karaka yearling sale, she is a sister to Colin Little’s 8 time Melbourne winner Pinsemtoit. Their dam Libre is a sister to NZ G1 Railway Handicap winner Ensign Ewart.
