Reset mare Goon Serpent caused a $31 upset in the G2 Queen of the South Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday.

The David Jolly trained mare highlighted a winning treble for Darley sires in Adelaide.  The Sheikh Mohammed owned filly Spatha (Lonhro) and Bell Trees (Exceed And Excel) also won support races at the Morphettville meeting.

Darley colt Backgammon (Domesday) produced a sensational trial for the G1 South Australian Derby next month with a flying third in the LR Port Adelaide Guineas.  And stablemate Pinwheel (Lonhro) also finished third in a close finish to the G3 McKay Stakes.

Goon Serpent (4m Reset – Capri Blue by Bluebird) came with a barnstormer to defeat top Tasmanian mare Lady Lynette for her fourth win in 10 starts.  She was a $14,000 buy out of the Arrowfield draft at the 2008 Inglis Classic yearling sale and has now earned over $158,000.

Reset (Zabeel) is the leading Victorian-based sire of stakes winners this season.  He resides at Darley’s Seymour establishment and, apart from Goon Serpent, has been represented by the Australian black-type winners Pinker Pinker (G2 & G3) Avienus (G2), Warpath (Listed), Well Rounded (G2), Rebel Raider (G3) and Set For Fame (G2) this season.

Astute Sunspeed breeders David and Jeremy Smith were also cheering Goon Serpent home from their base at Durham Lodge.  They bought her dam Capri Blue for $80,000 at the 2007 Inglis Easter broodmare sale.

Capri Blue owns a Western Australian connection through her dam Capricious Lass (Carry a Smile).  She was a Heytesbury homebred and was a G1 winner of the 1996 WATC Derby.

The Smiths have already recouped the cost of taking Capri Blue back to Durham Lodge with the sales of her subsequent yearlings by Flying Spur and Elvstroem at the Perth Magic Millions.  The mare foaled a Blackfriars filly last spring and was bred back to him in November.
