Pinnacles peaks for Galroof

Arrowfield maestro John Messara pulled off a master-stroke when he bought Galroof in 2002.

The NZ bred mare was owned by Tauranga couple Alan and Christine Abel and she had just finished second, beaten a head, by County Tyrone in the G1 Queensland Derby.

Galroof (Maroof) had won her maiden at Matamata in October 2001 before relocating to Mike Moroney’s Melbourne stables.  She won first-up at Echuca and then claimed the G3 Doomben Classic before unlucky seconds in the G1 Doomben Cup and G1 Queensland Derby.

The mare has been a wonderful recruit with her first three foals selling for a total of $680,000.

The first of them was a colt by former Arrowfield sire Fuji Kiseki that made $100,000 to the bid of Rick Hore-Lacy at the 2005 Inglis Easter yearling sale.

Now an 8yo named Pinnacles, he became racing’s latest millionaire with a popular victory in the $150,000 Sale Cup on Sunday.

Pinnacles has won 11 races and been placed at G1 level in the AJC Doncaster and the MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.  He was burdened with 59kg at Sale but benefited from a rail-hugging ride by Steven Arnold.

“It’s definitely one for the oldies but I was too busy to have a bet,” Hore-Lacy said.  “It was a great win and a champion ride from a champion rider.”

Galroof is also the dam of G1 Victoria Derby candidate Sabrage.

A $200,000 graduate of Arrowfield’s 2010 Inglis Easter yearling sale consignment, he is a last-start winner of the G3 Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield.

Sabrage is by Arrowfield sire Charge Forward and he is also prepared by Moroney who is gunning for a third Victoria Derby following Second Coming and Monaco Consul.

Galroof has a 2yo filly by Hussonet with Moroney.  The mare is also the dam of a Charge Forward yearling colt and last month she foaled a first-crop colt by Arrowfield sire All American.  She is being bred back to Charge Forward.
