Bernstein succumbs to colic

Castleton Lyons has announced internationally successful sire Bernstein was euthanased on Sunday due to complications from colic.  The Storm Cat stallion was only 14 years old.

Bernstein has sired top-class performers around the globe.  He sired Argentinean Horse of the Year Storm Mayor and fellow G1 winners Storm Military and Stormy Kiss who went on to further honours in the United States.

Among Bernstein’s notable North American-bred runners are Japanese Champion 2YO Goshawk Ken and the G1 winners Dream Empress and Miss World.

His sister Caress is the dam of G1 racehorse and sire Sky Mesa and he was a $925,000 weanling purchase by Demi O’Byrne at Keeneland in November 1997.

Bernstein was a precocious juvenile winning the G3 Railway Stakes at the Curragh.  At three, he captured the Shergar Cup Sprint at Ascot and G3 Concorde Stakes at Cork.

Bernstein’s latest tally of stakes winners stands at 70 and his progeny have amassed nearly $34 million in earnings.
