Pinwheel powers home in Canterbury Classic

Darley sprinter Pinwheel charged home to score a resounding victory over Whitefriars in the Listed Canterbury Classic on Friday night.  It made amends for his unlucky loss in the same race 12 months ago when he was beaten a half-length by News Alert after striking interference at the start.

Pinwheel (5g Lonhro – Quilt by Danehill) won his maiden as an October 3YO at Canterbury in 2008 and he came of age last season with a winning hat-trick at Warwick Farm and Rosehill (2).  He was runner-up to brilliant G3 Healy Stakes winner Hay List during the last Brisbane winter carnival before breaking through at Listed level in the Ramornie Hcp at Grafton.

Pinwheel is by Darley sire Lonhro and his dam Quilt is a three-quarter sister to G1 Hong Kong sprinter – miler Charming City (Chief’s Crown) and a full sister to G2 AJC Stan Fox Stakes winner West Point.

Quilt had thrown winners by Canny Lad, Octagonal (2) and Quest for Fame before Pinwheel.  The mare has a 2yo colt by Domesday named Trapunto and he was runner-up in a Warwick Farm trial in October.  She also has a yearling colt by Elusive Quality and a filly foal by Lonhro.

Lonhro is based at Darley’s Kelvinside nursery in NSW and his fee rose to $88,000 in 2010.
