South African legend Pocket Power is likely to be retired after running in the G1 J & B Met at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Pocket Power (8g Jet Master – Stormsvlei by Prince Florimund) finished fourth to Mother Russia in an attempt to win the Queen’s Plate for the fifth time in a row on January 8. “He didn’t quite run to his best that day,” trainer Mike Bass admitted. “Perhaps I didn’t have him spot on but, that said, I think we will probably retire him after this Saturday.”
Owners Marsh Shirtliff and Arthur Webber have left the final decision on retirement to Bass. Their champion galloper has won 20 of his 42 starts and he would have also won on the international stage if not for thin soles, particularly on his near-foreleg.
“He definitely feels a bit sharper since the Queen’s Plate,” regular rider Bernard Fayd’Herbe said. “Whatever happens on Saturday, he has been a fantastic horse, especially for me and my career.”
Pocket Power completed a hat-trick of J&B Met victories in 2009 but had to settle for a close up third to his younger sister River Jetez last year. Their sire Jet Master won the 1999 Queen’s Plate before retiring to stand at Klipdrif Stud in the Western Cape.
