Former shuttler Jade Hunter died due to complications from colic in Kentucky on Sunday. The son of Mr. Prospector was 27. His death comes just a fortnight after that of fellow retiree Polish Navy at the Old Friends Retirement Facility in Kentucky.
Jade Hunter was bought for $700,000 by Sheikh Mohammed at the 1985 Keeneland July yearling sale. He won four races for Darley and, after being sold to Allen Paulson, won the G1 Donn Handicap and G1 Gulfstream Park Hcp. He was trained throughout his career by Richard Lundy.
Jade Hunter, who entered stud at Paulson’s Brookside Farms in 1989, is represented by 46 stakes winners and the earners of more than $42 million. He found fame as the sire of Paulson’s Horse of the Year Azeri who won the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She was also voted Champion Female in 2003 and 2004.
He shuttled to Woodlands in Australia and Redoubt Park in New Zealand in the 1990s siring the Group winners Procrastinate (G3 VATC Tristarc Stake) and So Keen (G2 AJC Surround Stakes). Procrastinate is the dam of champion South African filly Laisserfaire and the Australian based stallions Foreplay and Time Thief.
