South African star Pocket Power will rewrite the record books if he wins the G1 Queen’s Plate at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Pocket Power (8g Jet Master – Stormsvlei by Prince Florimund) has won the last four editions of the Queen’s Plate and he will equal American legend Kelso with another victory in the Kenilworth feature.
Kelso as the only horse in history to win the same Group 1 event five times. He dominated the Jockey Club Gold Cup from 1960 to 1964. Manikato won five William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley between 1979 and 1983 when it was a Group 2 event.
Pocket Power faces probably the best Queen’s Plate field he has ever encountered. His rivals include unbeaten three-year-old filly Ebony Flyer, champion mare Mother Russia and the talented four-year-old geldings Past Master and Tales Of Bravery.
In his favour, Pocket Power could easily have been mistaken for a horse half his age when a last-start winner of the G2 Green Point Stakes and he is unbeaten over the course and distance of the Queen’s Plate.
Pocket Power’s preparation for the 150th running of the Queens Plate has gone according to plan according to trainer Mike Bass. He has been working as well as ever and his gallop at Kenilworth last Sunday was ultra encouraging.
“He’s a real champion and he proves it every time,” Bass said. “You can see he’s a little older and not doing it as easy. But when he puts it in, it takes a heck of horse to beat him.”
Given a decent pace, Pocket Power could thunder past his rivals and into the history books. A record-breaking crowd is expected to cheer him on at Kenilworth for the 150th running of the Queen’s Plate.
The Queen’s Plate will be run at 1.55am on Sunday morning (AEDT).
