Polish Navy put down in Kentucky

Former Australian shuttler Polish Navy has been euthanized in Kentucky.  The 27-year-old son of Danzig had been pensioned at Old Friends Retirement facility since 2009.

“Polish Navy injured his hip several weeks ago,” Old Friend president Michael Blowen said.  “Unfortunately, he just never recovered and the vets advised his time had come.”

Polish Navy (Danzig) was a homebred for the late Ogden Phipps and his dam Navsup (Tatan) was a half sister to Horse of the Year Buckpasser.  He was trained by Shug McGaughey and was a G1 winner of the Champagne Stakes and Cowdin Stakes at two and added the G1 Woodward Stakes after knee surgery kept him off the Triple Crown trail.

Polish Navy retired to Claiborne Farm and sired 1993 Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero in his second crop.  On the heels of that result, he was sold to Japan and sired six crops before being repatriated back to Wafare Farm in Kentucky.

He shuttled to Australia for a one-off season in 1999 and sired 19 winners at a 50% strike-rate.  His sole stakes winner from that crop was Listed SAJC City Of Marion Stakes winner Navy Shaker.
