Retired dairy farmer Don Walker sold himself short after producing another masterstroke with his well-performed mare Postmans Daughter (NZ) at Te Rapa.
The Pukekohe horseman started his six-year-old mare over 1200 metres for the first time and she responded with a valiant performance to down a high-class field in the G3 Foxbridge Plate on Saturday.
“I’m only a cow cocky, not a horse trainer, but she’s always had a good turn of foot,” Walker said. “She will go to the Makfi and will be a chance – she’s always been a good 1400 metre horse.”
Postmans Daughter (6m Postponed – Kinjabelle by Kinjite) settled off the leading pack in the Foxbridge and produced a resolute finish to make it 7 wins in a 40 start career. Minor placegetters Xanadu (Elusive City) and Final Touch (Kashani) also turned in excellent trials for their rematch in the Makfi Challenge.
Walker bred the mare from Avondale winner Kinjabelle and she is a direct descendant of NZ Champion mare Star Belle (Summertime). The dam has a yearling colt by Postponed.
Postponed (Summer Squall) has been based at Westbury Stud since Gerry Harvey purchased a half-share in him in 2009.
