The 2011 Inglis Great Southern Sale has plenty to offer shrewd buyers looking for a bargain. The Melbourne sale will be held over four days from May 17 to 20.
Group 1 Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Choice is the latest reminder of the quality bloodstock that can be sourced at Oaklands Junction.
Now a dual Group 1 winner (having conquered Typhoon Tracy and Hot Danish in the 2010 Myer Classic at Flemington), Sacred Choice’s dam Sacred Habit was plucked out of the 2009 Great Southern Sale for a mere $2,000.
Other examples of bargain broodmare purchases include the dam of Horse of the Year Scenic Blast for $12,000 and Group 1 performer Carrara for $65,000.
In addition to its broodmares, the weanling section of the sale includes the Group 1 graduate Warm Love (Octagonal) who was placed behind Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes. She cost just $9000.
Group 1 Thousand Guineas and AJC Sires Produce winner Yosei was secured for $15,000, while G3 winner That’s Not It was passed in at $25,000.
A highlight of weanling sales each year is the appearance of progeny by new sires headed this year by Sebring, Northern Meteor, Reaan, Sharkbite and high profile shuttlers Duke Of Marmalade, Henrythenavigator, Astronomer Royal and Street Boss.
The Great Southern Sale begins with 385 weanlings catalogued on May 17 and 18.
The Great Southern Bloodstock Sale will be staged on May 19 and 20. This section of the sale includes 300 broodmares, followed by 100 lots comprising stallions, yearlings, racehorses and unbroken stock.
