Darley sires launched Caulfield Guineas day with a running double starting with Adamantium in the Carlton Draught Racing Sweep (1200m).
Adamantium (Elusive Quality) paved the way for Platelet (Strategic) who scored a G3 victory in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m)
Trainer Danny O’Brien rates Adamantium highly but not highly enough to take on another Elusive Quality colt in the G1 Coolmore Stakes at Flemington in three weeks.
“The options are limited because you’re running for second to Sepoy in the Coolmore,” O’Brien said. “He’s a lovely style of colt and will get out to a mile. We might even give him a break and look at the autumn.”
Adamantium (3c Elusive City – Della Mimosa by Generous) made $250,000 at the 2010 NZB Select yearling sale. He was catalogued by Hilton Mackley through the Haunui Farm draft and the breeder kept a share after the sale.
The Flemington based colt is from a half-sister to Doomben stakes winning filly Pottinger (Al Hareb). His win was also a pointer to the Zizou – Pottinger colt being offered at the 2011 Magic Millions HIT Sale later this month.
Platelet broke through for her initial black-type success after a last-start second to stablemate Miss Stellabelle in a Group 3 at Moonee Valley last Friday week.
“She had barrier problems early on but turned the corner and won her maiden at Geelong in August,” trainer Darren Weir said. “She’s very relaxed and is a simple horse to train now.”
Platelet (3f Strategic – Bloodline by Dracula) settled one out and one back before defeating the favourite The Fairy’s Kiss (Elusive Quality) by three-quarters of a length.
The Ballarat based filly will return to town for a 1200 metre event on Cox Plate day. Her dam has already foaled two winners by Octagonal including the Weir trained filly What A Beauty.
