Top 40 for Bel Esprit

Bel Esprit kick-started the defence of his Victorian sires’ crown when world champion Black Caviar returned to racing at Caulfield on Saturday.

Black Caviar (5m Bel Esprit – Helsinge by Desert Sun) extended her unbeaten run to 14 with an effortless victory in the G2 Schillaci Stakes on her home track.

Bel Esprit started the day with 9 length Albury maiden winner Stacey Lee.  Black Caviar made it 40 wins for the current season and the Eliza Park sire is on course to better his previous record of 196 wins set in 2010-11.

Black Caviar’s dam Helsinge is a half-sister to Eliza Park’s G1 winning sire Magnus (Flying Spur).  Her second foal Moshe won two races at Moonee Valley last season.  He is also by Bel Esprit and is raced by a syndicate headed by Roy Higgins and Chefs on the Run owner Wiley Dalziel.

Helsinge’s 2yo is a Casino Prince colt that made $1,025,000 to the bid of John Hawkes at this year’s Inglis Easter yearling sale.

Helsinge is owned by Gilgai Farm principal Rick Jamieson and he has catalogued her Redoute’s Choice filly for the 2012 Inglis Easter yearling sale.

Black Caviar is scheduled to start next in the G2 Schweppes Stakes at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day and before heading to Flemington for a second G1 Patinack Farm Classic on the final day of Flemington’s Melbourne Cup carnival.
