Jet Spur is on target for a record-breaking season in 2009-10. The Glenlogan Park resident has already sired 10 individual juvenile winners and is within sight of the existing first-season record of 16 winners held by More Than Ready (2004-05) and Lion Hunter (2001-02).
Jet Spur cracked double figures when Equissential scored at Toowoomba on Saturday night. The locally trained colt scored a $15 upset in the Euroka Kitchens & Joinery Maiden over 1200 metres.
The numbers stack up in favour of Jet Spur with 114 foals in his first crop. More Than Ready had 85 and Lion Hunter 73.
Jet Spur is a son of Flying Spur whose best season to date was 16 individual 2YO winners with his second crop in 2001-02. That was the season he came up trumps with G1 winning filly Juanmo. The Arrowfield champion tied with Rory’s Jester on top of the 2YO table.
Jet Spur leads Redoute’s Choice by one winner on this year’s ladder. The last freshman sire to finish ahead of all-comers was in 2003-04 when newcomer Catbird tied with fellow Danehill sire Lion Hunter on 15 winners.
Of course, Jet Spur could overtake More Than Ready and Lion Hunter and still not win the first-season premiership for individual winners. He’s three ahead of Widden Stud stallion Stratum who is far from a lost cause with 150 foals in his first crop.
And while Jet Spur is winless in the black-type category, Stratum has Contract Racing filly Crystal Lily right in the reckoning for the G1 Golden Slipper Stakes.
Equissential (2c Jet Spur – Belle of the Ball by Fairy King) isn’t in that class but will more than pay his way for Kevin and Tanith O’Brien of Lauriston Thoroughbreds.
Equissential was a $30,000 buy from the Glenlogan Park draft at the 2009 Magic Millions QTIS 600 yearling sale. He is a half-brother to four winners and the dam of Mr Profumo (Falvelon) who was a G3 winner of the AJC Kindergarten Stakes before his sale to Singapore.
Jet Spur was popular at the 2010 Magic Millions QTIS 600 yearling sale on Sunday and Monday with five lots selling for $50,000 or more. His second-crop sale-topper was the Oakwood Farm filly from Daasrae’s Pride (Lot 167) that made $75,000 to Magic Millions (as agent).
Jet Spur’s next chance to add another notch to his winner list is Dont Call Me Crazy in Race 1 at Eagle Farm on Wednesday. The Toowoomba filly led them up on debut at the Gold Coast in November before going out for a 19 week spell.
