Boom British colt Frankel returns to racing in the G3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
Frankel (3c Galileo – Kind by Danehill) hasn’t been seen since turning a red-hot renewal of the G1 Dewhurst Stakes into a procession on October 16. He will face five rivals in the Greenham including stablemate Picture Editor who will ensure a true gallop.
The Henry Cecil-trained colt is a $1.30 favourite for the Greenham and he’s also in the red for the English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on April 30.
Frankel is a Juddmonte Farms homebred and he won the Dewhurst off an effortless 10 length victory in the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot. “I’ve never had a colt like him,’ Cecil said. “The last juvenile I saw of his calibre was Arazi.”
Juddmonte Farms owner Khalid Abdulla also raced his dam Kind and damsire Danehill. Kind was a Listed winner at Nottingham and Hamilton and her first foal Bullet Train (Sadler’s Wells) was a G3 winner of last year’s Lingfield Derby Trial.
Kind is a half-sister to Powerscourt (Sadler’s Wells) who was a G1 winner of the G1 Irish Gold Cup and Arlington Million. He retired to Coolmore Stud’s Irish headquarters and then transferred to the Turkish National Stud last year.
Second favourite in the Greenham is 2010 G2 Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit. The Rahy colt is trained by Richard Hannon who won the race last year with Dick Turpin.
The Greenham Stakes is scheduled for 12.10am Sunday morning (AEST).
