Rosie revives memories of Rosamoss

Rosie Can brought up a running double for Alwyn Park sire Trade Fair (GB) at Pinjarra on Thursday.

The Mick Sheehy trained mare scored a barrier-to-box victory at her third run back from a spell.  She had come within a neck of a $101 upset last month and was allowed to go out at $12 in the 6MM Radio Maiden (1200m).

Earlier in the day, Trade Fair filly Yaloginda opened her account for owner-breeder David Reed at Pinjarra.

Rosie Can (4m Trade Fair – Rossam by Scenic) has a pedigree with enough depth to suggest she will develop into a good stayer.  “She’s only small and is all heart,” Sheehy said.  “She can be a bit headstrong but is basically a kind mare.”

Rosie Can is the first foal of Rossam who won 8 races for the Sheehy family.  She also finished third in Respect’s 2007 Perth Cup.

Second-dam Rosie’s Wonder (Gold And Ivory) only got as far as a Mt Barker maiden, however, her third dam Rosamoss (Moss Trooper) was the most popular mare of her generation in Perth.

In the 1980s, owner-breeders John and Joan Blackburn raced Rosamoss to victories in the Boulder Cup, Kalgoorlie Cup, Anniversary Cup, Eurythmic Cup and Towton Cup.

She was the catalyst for the arrival of Moss Trooper in Western Australia.  He initially stood in New Zealand and served out the rest of his stud career at Rosa Park in the Chittering Valley.

Sheehy owns Rosie Can in partnership with his brother Henry.  “We will map out a program when he’s over here for Christmas,” Mick said.  “He went to New Zealand for a holiday as a young bloke and stayed there.  He’s 83 now!”

The brothers have a Trade Fair brother to Rosie Can named Rossmoyne.  He trialled at Lark Hill in September and, in Sheehy’s words, is a ‘wilful’ type.

Trade Fair (Zafonic) stands at Alwyn Park for a $4,950(inc gst) service fee.

His Malaysian based gelding No Uncertainty was successful at Penang last weekend.  Sold by De Grey Stud for $11,000 at the 2009 Perth Magic Millions, he has now earned the equivalent of AUD 128,745.
