Fully 45 years after winning his first Golden Slipper, Bart Cummings produced exciting colt Salade to win the G2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) on debut at Rosehill on Saturday.
Salade (2c Snitzel – Just as Beautiful by Beautiful Crown) reeled in the leaders with a barnstorming finish to score by more than two lengths from Boys on Tour (General Nediym) and Exceed and Exalt (Exceed And Excel).
He firmed from $101 to $13 to give Bart his fifth Golden Slipper next Saturday. “There is only one race that counts and you don’t want to wear them out beforehand,” Cummings said. “If he was good enough, he was going to get in.”
Salade is a second crop son of Arrowfield sire Snitzel and was a $65,000 purchase for Mathew Sandblom at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale.
He was sold by Widden Stud and is the first winner for 2004 Black Opal Stakes placegetter Just as Beautiful. The dam is a half sister to Listed VRC Maribyrnong Trial winner Tropical Affair (Danehill).
Just as Beautiful was sold to WA based Mungrup Stud for just $15,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions National Sale. Her yearling colt by Haradasun was withdrawn from this year’s Inglis Classic Sale. She has a filly foal by Lucky Owners and was covered by Mungrup sire Danehill Express in November.
Cummings won the 1966 Golden Slipper with Storm Queen but his brother Pat accepted the silverware at Rosehill. Bart stayed home to saddle up emerging stayer Galilee to win the City of Adelaide Hcp in front of the Queen Mother.
The master went on to win further Golden Slippers with Tontonan (1973), Vivarchi (1976) and Century Miss (1979).
Salade’s sire Snitzel was in the mix for last year’s Golden Slipper with his first-crop filly Chance Bye. She went into the race with an unbeaten record but faded to finish ninth to Crystal Lily.
Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) was a $4.50 favourite in the 2005 Golden Slipper, however, he was galloped on and finished well behind Stratum.
Stratum was the last horse to complete the Pago Pago Stakes – Golden Slipper double.
