Victoria Derby winner Sangster received a setback for his upcoming Australian campaign when a proposed trial at Cambridge was postponed last week.
Sangster (NZ) has been nominated for the G1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington next Saturday, March 3 and is currently quoted at $41. “He’s still 10kg up on his ideal weight,” co-trainer Natalie Young said on Saturday. “The trial would have finished him off nicely before flying out to Melbourne.”
Sangster (3g Savabeel – Quinta Special by Spectrum) tailed the field in the G1 Waikato Draught Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa a fortnight ago when resuming from a 15 week spell.
He was last seen on this side of the Tasman winning the G1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington in October. He went into the classic on the back of placings in the G1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick and the G3 Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield.
Sangster cost just $19,000 from the Kilgravin Lodge draft at the 2010 NZ Bloodstock 2YO Ready to Run Sale.
Waikato Stud sire Savabeel got the Derby winner from Irish bred mare Quinta Special who won over 1800m at Wolverhampton in November 2002 before arriving in New Zealand the following year. Her Savabeel filly failed to reach a $170,000 reserve at the 2012 NZB Karaka yearling sale.
Second dam Al Galop (Affirmed) was a 2200m winner at Longchamp and she is a half-sister to Santa Anita Group 1 winner Both Ends Burning.
Sangster has also been entered for the G1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 10. Connections will then send him to Sydney where he holds nominations for the G1 BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on April 7 and G1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick a week later.
