Champion sire A.P. Indy continued a lucrative run at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select yearling sale on Tuesday evening when his colt from Eclipse Award winner Maryfield made US$1.2 million.

The colt was consigned by Bluewater Sales (as agent) and was purchased by trainer Todd Pletcher acting for Ben Leon’s Besilu Stables.  “He is a beautiful conformed colt,” Pletcher said.  “He handled himself well.  He’s a good-sized first foal with an excellent walk.  He’s out of a champion mare and checked all the boxes.”

Maryfield sold for $1.25 million at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Autumn Sale shortly after winning the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.  She has an Unbridled’s Song weanling and is back in foal to Medaglia d’Oro.

Maryfield (Elusive Quality) descends from the family of G1 winner La Zanzara (Sea Hawk) who is the dam of G2 winners Danebo (Bold Forbes) & Sir Pele (Bold Forbes).  Another of her foals is Italian 2YO Champion Blu Tsunami (Afleet) who sired Murphy’s Blu Boy while standing at Glenlogan Park in Queensland.

A.P. Indy dominated Day 1 of the Saratoga Sale on Monday.  He figured as damsire of the top two sellers and he also factored in the male line of the third and fourth most expensive lots during the opening session.

A Distorted Humor half-sister to 2001 Horse of the Year Point Given (Thunder Gulch) sold for $850,000.  And John Ferguson, representing Sheikh Mohammed, paid $750,000 for an Afleet Alex half-brother to champion colt Lookin at Lucky (Smart Strike).  He parted with the same amount for a Smart Strike half-brother to last year’s G1 Spinster Stakes winner Mushka (Empire Maker).

Fasig-Tipton reported Tuesday’s second and final session average declined 12% to $299,407.  Cumulatively, the sale average was down 15% to $277,051, while the median remained level at $250,000.
