Scenic Shot rewrites record books at Doomben

Scenic Shot confirmed he is still very much a contender after a popular victory in the G1 Doomben Cup on Saturday.  The old warhorse did best in a three-way finish over My Kingdom Of Fife (Kingmambo) and Glass Harmonium (Verglas).

Scenic Shot (8g Scenic – Sweepshot by Dr Grace) was bred and reared in Perth but has become a crowd favourite in Brisbane.  He joins Rough Habit as the only multiple winner of the Doomben Cup in the last 50 years.

Dan Morton prepared Scenic Shot to win the 2009 Doomben Cup on the way to a feature hat-trick in the O’Shea Stakes and Brisbane Cup.  “I was a bit worried with him back on the fence because he doesn’t normally like it there,” Morton said.  “But he’s an absolute tiger in a finish and I knew he wouldn’t lay down.”

Morton said the O’Shea Stakes and Brisbane Cup are on the agenda again this year.  “If he’s fit and well, we will roll the dice in both races.  He’s going better now than he was two years ago.”

The 2011 Doomben Cup sent Scenic Shot (17 wins) one clear of Marasco (16) at the front-line of Scenic’s 651 winners.

Scenic Shot also joined Marasco as the most successful stakes winner by Scenic.  They have both captured 12 black-type races which is more than any of Scenic’s 72 stakes winners.

Melbourne Cup winner Viewed ($6.00 million) has earned more than any other Scenic galloper in Australia.  Scenic Shot moved past Universal Prince into second spot after earning $325,500 on Saturday.  His bank balance now stands at $2.97 million.

A $36,000 purchase at the 2004 Perth Magic Millions, Scenic Shot is a half brother to 2009 Perth Magic Millions 3YO Trophy winner Flight Path (Bletchley Park).

Their dam Sweepshot died aged 14 in February 2010.  She has an unraced 3yo filly named Line Of Flight (Bletchley Park) and an unraced 2yo gelding named Ultimate Success (Blackfriars).

Apart from his own success at stud, Scenic holds a special place in the history books as the first-ever Group 1 winner sired by Coolmore colossus Sadler’s Wells.

Scenic and fellow Sadler’s Wells colt Prince of Dance dead-heated in the G1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in October 1988.

Scenic pre-deceased his own sire at Durham Lodge in March 2005.
