There were no fond farewells for Elusive Quality when he left Australia for the last time in 2008. The Darley shuttler averaged over a 100 mares in six seasons down here but the only horse of any consequence at that stage was his G1 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Camarilla.
Elusive Quality won’t return to Australia even though he left potential champion Sepoy in his penultimate southern crop. Ironically, his latest star is a brother-in-blood to Camarilla.
Sepoy (2c Elusive Quality – Watchful by Danehill) brought up a winning hat-trick in the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (C & G) at Caulfield on Saturday and TAB Sportsbet immediately installed him a $2.20 favourite for the G1 Blue Diamond Final on February 26.
“I lobbed outside the leader without as much as a squeeze,” winning jockey Mark Zahra claimed. “Once balanced, he saw the others coming and put paid to them really quick. He’s bombproof.”
Sepoy’s dam Watchful is a sister to G1 Queensland Derby winner Camarena (Danehill) whose four winners to date include Camarilla. Watchful has a yearling colt by Dubai Destination and she was covered by Domesday last year.
