Sepoy farewells Flemington

Sepoy farewelled Flemington in style with a Group 1 triumph in the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Saturday.

The Darley champion was brave rather than brilliant at headquarters.  He won by a bare margin from the fast finishing Foxwedge but, in his defence, trainer Peter Snowden said it was a credit to the colt that he had stayed up for so long.

“He’s had five hard runs at the top level this time in,” Snowden said.  “He’s only a young horse and it was a really good effort.”

Sepoy (2c Elusive Quality – Watchful by Danehill) will join Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin team in Europe next year.

He is unbeaten in Victoria since winning the LR Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington in October 2010.  He returned earlier this year to sweep the Blue Diamond Preview, Prelude and Final at Caulfield before completing a championship season in the Golden Slipper at Rosehill.

Sepoy’s winning run this season began in the LR Vain Stakes at Caulfield on August 13.  He followed up with the G2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington, G1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley and G2 Caulfield Sprint leading into the Coolmore.

Sepoy is from the penultimate southern crop of Darley sire Elusive Quality and his dam Watchful is a sister to G1 Queensland Derby winner Camarena (Danehill).

Watchful has a 2yo colt by Dubai Destination named Mulaazem and she foaled Domesday filly last month.
