Sha Tin stakes winner for Flying Spur

Sapelli highlighted Flying Spur’s affinity with mares by Sir Tristram’s sons and grandsons when he powered home in the G3 HKJC Premier Plate (1800m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Sapelli (5g Flying Spur – Ishkala by Zabeel) loitered under a light weight at the back of the field before he did best after a spirited fight Mighty High to score by a short head.

It increased Flying Spur’s stakes winner tally to 81 and 12 of them are from mares by sons and grandsons of Sir Tristram.

Sapelli had won a New Zealand trial in May 2008 and was then sold to John Size client Albert Chan Koon Sang.  He has now won 7 races in 33 starts and earned more than AUD1.1 million in prizemoney.  He’s the leading earner in Hong Kong this season for Flying Spur who has been a Top 10 sire there since 2005.

Sapelli’s dam Ishkala had been purchased in foal to Flying Spur for $95,000 by Highview Stud at the 2005 Magic Millions Winter Broodmare Sale.  Second dam Western Music  was a Listed winner of the VRC Maribyrnong Trial Stakes.

Flying Spur, Australia’s champion sire of 2007, has 31 lots in the 2011 Inglis Easter yearling sale, including five fillies and a colt in the Arrowfield draft.
