Shamrocker upstaged the colts in the G1 VRC Australian Guineas at Flemington last month and she franked that form in the G1 AJC Australian Derby on Saturday.

The NZ bred filly outstayed Retrieve (Rahy) and Anacheeva (Anabaa) in the Randwick classic to boost her bankroll to $1.85 million.

Shamrocker (3f O’Reilly – Bohemian Blues by Blues Traveller) became the first filly since Research (1989) to win the Derby.  She will butter up as a short-priced favourite in the G1 AJC Australian Oaks next Saturday.

“It’s a very special day and to win the 150th running of the Derby is a great honour,” trainer Danny O’Brien said.  “This filly can stay and she loves Flemington so the Melbourne Cup is the obvious aim in the spring.”

Shamrocker opened her black-type account in the G2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington this time last year and she was also runner-up to Brazilian Pulse at headquarters in the G1 VRC Oaks in November.

She is by Waikato Stud sire O’Reilly who sired O’Brien’s 2007 Caulfield Cup winner Master O’Reilly.

Her dam Bohemian Blues is a winning half-sister to G3 Singapore Stewards’ Cup winner Fairy Tale (Shinko King) and Macau Listed winner Rock N Roll Kid (Justice Prevails).  She was a 65,000 buy out of the Valachi Downs draft at the 2009 NZ Bloodstock Select yearling sale at Karaka.

Valachi Downs sold Shamrocker’s yearling half-brother by Shinko King to Rogerson Bloodstock for $200,000 at the 2011 NZB Premier yearling sale at Karaka.
