Sheikh Mohammed has continued to cover his bases for the 2010 classics by purchasing Dewhurst Stakes favourite Chabal. The Galileo colt will run in Godolphin’s colours in the Group 1 at Newmarket this Saturday.
Chabal (2c Galileo – Vagary by Zafonic) was beaten a neck when runner-up to Kingsfort in the G1 National Stakes at the Curragh last month. He went into that Group 1 off the back of a maiden win on debut at Leopardstown.
“I can confirm that Chabal has been sold and that he will be running for me for the last time in the Dewhurst on Saturday,” trainer Jim Bolger revealed. Chabal will be attempting to give Bolger a fourth consecutive win in the Dewhurst following Teofilo, New Approach and Intense Focus.
Sheikh Mohammed and the County Carlow based trainer have a history of doing deals with youngsters by Coolmore sire Galileo. He bought Teofilo to stand at stud after the colt defeated Holy Roman Emperor in the 2006 Dewhurst Stakes.
The Dubai ruler purchased a half-share in New Approach for his wife Princess Haya before the 2007 Dewhurst. He went on to win the 2008 Epsom Derby plus the English and Irish Champion Stakes.
The Kevin Prendergast trained colt Kingsfort, who defeated Chabal at the Curragh, has also been acquired by Godolphin. The unbeaten War Chant colt is a half-brother to Prince Arch, a G1 winner of the Gulfstream Park Breeders’ Cup.
