Shocking retires to Rich Hill Stud

Shocking will be Street Cry’s first Australian-bred stakes winner to stand at stud when he retires to Rich Hill in New Zealand this spring.

The G1 Melbourne Cup hero bows out as a last start winner of the G1 Australian Cup on March 12.

“His win in the Australian Cup was excellent and he’s been retired in good health and in good order,” trainer Mark Kavanagh said.  “He had done enough and, when the offer materialised, we decided to go with it.”

A Bendigo maiden winner in April 2009, Shocking stepped up for Caulfield and Flemington victories the following month before finishing a long-neck second to Court Ruler in the G1 Queensland Derby.

Resuming as a spring four year-old, he was placed behind Alcopop in the Listed JRA Cup at Moonee Valley and the G2 Herbert Power Hcp at Caulfield.

Three days after claiming the G3 Lexus Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington, he was forced to sit three-wide in the Melbourne Cup but the nightmare run turned into a dream result when he defied all odds to win the race that stops our nation.

Shocking (5h Street Cry – Maria Di Castiglia by Danehill) is owned by Laurence Eales and he also races Street Cry’s G1 galloper Whobegotyou with Kavanagh.

Eales went to $64,000 to buy Shocking at the 2007 Magic Millions 2YO HIT Sale.  He originally went through the ring at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale when purchased for $45,000 by Washpool Lodge out of the Ilala Stud consignment.

Darley shuttler Street Cry has sired 47 individual stakes winners headed by USA Horse of the Year Zenyatta and Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.  He can also claim the world’s premier classic in a fortnight when the Queen Elizabeth owned colt Carlton House starts favourite in the English Derby.

Shocking’s dam Maria Di Castiglia foaled minor winners by King of Kings, End Sweep, Xaar and Lujain before visiting Street Cry.  She was bred in England and retired a maiden after just three starts.  Second dam Macrina Pompea (Don Roberto) was a Listed winner in Italy.

Shocking will stand for a $12,000 fee at Rich Hill Stud alongside Pentire, Any Suggestion and English Derby winner Sir Percy.
