Next month’s Magic Millions National yearling sale received a boost when quality three-year-old Shootoff won the $100,000 Lord Mayor’s Cup at Canterbury on Saturday.
Shootoff (3g Duelled – Athenri by Zabeel) treated his older rivals with contempt while cruising home by next to three lengths. He started favourite after a last-start victory in the LR Frank Packer Plate at Randwick on Sydney Cup day.
“He did a great job and was a bit above them,” jockey Josh Adams said. “He put paid to them very quickly and really went on with it in the straight.”
Trainer Graeme Rogerson will send Shootoff north for the G1 Queensland Derby and that’s good news for Evergreen Stud’s Tony Bott who has consigned his three quarter brother for the upcoming Magic Millions National yearling sale.
The bay or brown colt by Duelled from the Tights mare Intrim will parade as Lot 1986 at the Gold Coast on Monday, June 6.
Rogerson bought Duelled for $300,000 at the 2004 Gold Coast Magic Millions and trained him to a G2 victory in the MVRC AAMI Vase. He is a Redoute’s Choice three-quarter brother to Nothin’ Leica Dane and retired to Dormello Stud in 2006.
Shootoff is from his first crop and was catalogued for the 2009 NZ Bloodstock HIT Sale. Rogerson took him back home to the Hamilton based stud with a $35,000 vendor bid.
