Shrapnel shines in Adelaide

Not for the first time, Highgrove Stud’s star mare Fragmentation will be represented by a high-profile colt at this year’s Inglis Easter yearling sale.

Fragmentation is the dam of G1 VRC Newmarket Hcp winner Wanted (Fastnet Rock) and she received another black-type update on Monday when Shrapnel was a fleet-footed winner of the G2 Yallambee Classic at Morphettville.

Shrapnel (3c Charge Forward – Fragmentation by Snippets) has always been rated highly by trainer Mark Kavanagh and punters shared that view when the colt landed a plunge that sent his price tumbling from $12 into $5.

He led from the front and applied a nice turn of acceleration on the turn to put the race beyond doubt.  He races in Arrowfield’s back and yellow diamond silks and part-owners include Highgrove owner Ron Gilbert who bought back into the colt after he was secured by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds.

Shrapnel is now the winner of three races in seven starts. He was a G3 winner of the Marsh Breeders’ Stakes in Adelaide 12 months ago and will soon be given a chance to emulate Wanted at the highest level.

Wanted was an $800,000 graduate of the Highgrove draft at the 2008 Easter Sale and Shrapnel made $450,000 in the same sale-ring a year later.

Highgrove Stud will offer a Fastnet Rock – Fragmentation colt as Lot 252 at this year’s Easter Sale.  The Sale will be held in Sydney from April 5 – 7.
