Arrowfield champion Flying Spur was credited with the sixth winner among his current crop of three year-old fillies at Geelong on Friday.  And the latest one is bred to be the best.

Arctic Flight (3f Flying Spur – Scandinavia by Snippets) won on debut for owner-breeder Rob Crabtree despite doing it the hard way in the GRC Function & Event Centre Maiden (1200m).

The Mick Price trained filly started an odds-on favourite on suspicion alone.  She wasn’t sighted at the trials but is a half-sister to G1 sprinter Magnus and the dam of world champion Black Caviar.

Craig Newitt had his hands full from the outset aboard Arctic Flight.  A strapping chestnut, she was caught wide and was all at sea around the home turn before staying on strongly in the straight.  “She’s immature but so relaxed,” Newitt said.  “She waited for them once she got to the front.”

Flying Spur’s divisional leader Satin Shoes started the season with a Listed victory in the Quezette Stakes at Caulfield and Arctic Flight can also make the grade at stakes level.

The half-dozen among his three year-old fillies has filled out with Bliss Street (Belmont), Flying Away (Morphettville), God Bless Us (Canterbury) and Spur Point (Sunshine Coast).

Flying Spur (Danehill) will stand for a $49,500 (inc gst) fee at Arrowfield this year.  The Danehill – Snippets cross is also responsible for Arrowfield Stud’s leading sire Snitzel.
