Trainer Justin Snaith triumphed in the G1 Cape Guineas on Saturday when Solo Traveller defeated his stablemate Run For It at Kenilworth.

Solo Traveller (3c  Western Winter–Strawberry Lane by Jallad) wore him down Kavanagh and held off late closer Run For It by a long neck.  Australian bred Perana (Rock of Gibraltar) was fourth.

“I had to give my horse a crack because he was idling,” winning jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe said.  “He got through a tight gap and then it was no problem.  He’s tough.”

Solo Traveller is by Gone West sire Western Winter and there’s an Australian connection through his second dam Taineberry.  She was by Centaine from Coolmore Classic winner Strawberry Fair and was a $52,500 buy for Delta Bloodstock at the 1996 Inglis Easter yearling sale.  Sent to South Africa, she was a G2 winner of the Scottsville Oaks before retiring to Lammerskraal Stud.

Solo Traveller broke his maiden at Kenilworth in July and came back this season to land the G3 Cape Classic and G2 Selangor Cup (SAf-G2).

Snaith said Solo Traveller would be set for the J & B Met on January 29.  Run For It head for the Cape Derby which is also scheduled for January 29.  

The Snaith and Fayd’Herbe combination had also won the Cape Fillies Guineas with Ebony Flyer on December 4.   Snaith said the Jet Master filly could end up racing overseas after the Cape summer carnival where her goal is also the J&B Met.
