Snitzel colt sizzles in T J Smith Stakes

Sizzling capped a stunning winter campaign with a thrilling Group 1 victory in the T J Smith Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Prepared at the track by Kelso Wood, Sizzling was sent out the hot favourite after three unbeaten stakes wins this campaign.  With his regular rider Chris Munce in the saddle, the Snitzel colt was able to wear down Sydney visitor Kabayan to win by a short head in a driving finish.

“He doesn’t lie down,” Wood said.  “I didn’t think he was going to get there but he really dug deep.  He’s a marvellous horse and it’s a pleasure to train one like him.”

Sizzling was sent out an odds-on favourite after lead-up wins in the Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast, Champagne Classic at Doomben and Queensland Sires’ Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Wood said he wouldn’t rush a decision as to what the future holds for Sizzling but suggested a trip to Melbourne for the G1 Caulfield Guineas was certainly on the cards.

Sizzling (2c Snitzel – Admirelle by General Nediym) was purchased on behalf of connections by agent John Foote for $260,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.  He is first Group 1 winner for former star Magic Millions graduate Snitzel who has made an immediate impact at Arrowfield Stud.

Snitzel is a clear second for the Australian 2YO sires’ premiership with 13 winners of 23 races and $2.72 million.  Lonhro established an unbeatable lead for the title when Pierro won the Sydney Triple Crown.  The Darley champion has sired 7 juvenile winners of 12 races for earnings of $3.34 million.
