Sophia Streets ahead in USA

Darley Victoria shuttler Street Boss sired his 21st stakes winner when Cathryn Sophia thrashed a strong field of fillies in the LR Gin Talking Stakes (1400m) at Laurel on Saturday.

The John Servis trained juvenile scored by 16 lengths second-up after winning her maiden by 12 lengths in Philadelphia on October 30.

“This is a really nice filly,” jockey Roberto Rosado said.  “I just sat there.”

Cathryn Sophia (2f Street Boss – Sheave by Mineshaft) was never challenged and there was another 5 lengths between Prognosis (Tiznow) and Thundering Sky (Sky Mesa) for the trifecta.

The form lines leading into the race were formidable.  Prognosis was a last-start Keeneland allowance winner, Thundering Sky was coming off a placing to subsequent G2 Demoiselle Stakes winner Lewis Bay while fourth home Mecke’s Madalyn had won the Shesastonecoldfox Stakes at Finger Lakes.

Servis, who prepared Smarty Jones to classic victories in the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, believes Cathryn Sophia is a special filly.  “She does everything so easy and acts like a racehorse,” he said.  “She showed some talent once she started training on a regular basis but I had no idea she was going to be this good.”

The Street Boss filly is raced by Cash is King Stable owner Chuck Zacney after changing hands for $30,000 at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Maryland yearling sale.  Zacney raced Afleet Alex to wins in the 2005 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

Cathryn Sophia’s dam Sheave is an unraced daughter of G2 Golden Rod Stakes winner Belterra and among the mare’s earlier foals is this year’s Sugar Maple Stakes winner Taketheodds (Street Sense).

Street Boss (Street Cry) stands at Northwood Park for a fee of $11,000 (inc gst).
