Anthony Cummings produced Sorriso for a fresh win over a mile before the Xmas break and the promising gelding should handle 2025 metres second up at Cranbourne on Sunday (Race 5 at 3.10pm AEDT).

Sorriso (5g Galileo – Lycra by Tights) faced the starter for three educational hit-outs in August – September and was then given a 14 week break before Cummings brought him back for his first fair-dinkum test at Bairnsdale on December 21. 

Jockey Matt Allen settled him right behind front-runner Jerry Needs A Name who shot well clear turning for home.  The Galileo gelding knuckled down to the task and overhauled the leader close to home.  He pulled up all the better for that run under his belt and will be hard to hold out on Sunday.

He is by Coolmore shuttler Galileo whose southern hemisphere stock aren’t the equal of his Irish bred progeny  Nevertheless, he has sired 126 winners at a 51% strike-rate in Australia and NZ. 

Sorriso is from Champion Kiwi filly Lycra who was a dual Group 1 winner of the Ellerslie and Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.  She was also G1 placed in Australia in the QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes and VATC One Thousand Guineas.

The best of her five winners to date is The Man (Dehere) who was a G3 winner of the AJC Craven Plate.  Cummings purchased Sorriso for $190,000 from the Yallambee Stud draft at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
