Champion European sire Invincible Spirit left a lasting legacy from his time at Chatswood Stud thanks to Group 1 winner Yosei. The Caulfield based filly won the G1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes in April and she doubled up at the elite level in the MRC One Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on Wednesday.
Yosei (3f Invincible Spirit – Fuji Fairy by Fuji Kiseki) saved ground along the rails under Michelle Payne and then split runners in the straight to win by two lengths from Heartsareforlove (Hussonet) and Brazilian Pulse (Captain Rio).
“I knew when she got the run she would really quicken up,” Payne explained. “She loves give in the ground and really sprinted through the gap. She’s just a little star and I love her.”
Invincible Spirit has sired numerous Group 1 horses from his base at the Irish National Stud including 2007 French Derby winner Lawman and 2009 USA Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Vale Of York.
He shuttled to Chatswood for four years until 2006 and, apart from Yosei, the best of his southern stock has been brilliant sprinter I Am Invincible who is currently standing his first season at Yarraman Park.
Yosei kept improving race by race during her first preparation earlier this year. She won a Benalla maiden in February before going on to claim the G1 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick during the autumn carnival.
Her dam Fuji Fairy was trained by Cliffy Brown but was retired after being beaten 11 lengths at Ballarat the only time she faced the starter. Second dam Lilac Fairy (Rainbow Quest) was an unraced half-sister to South African G2 winner Zelator (Alzao).
Yosei failed to reach a $15,000 reserve when offered by Woodlawn Park at the 2008 Inglis Great Southern weanling sale. She was retained by breeder John Pittard and he shares ownership in the filly with Paul and Robert McClure.
Her younger half-sister by Bianconi was also passed-in for $17,000 at the 2010 Inglis Classic yearling sale in January.
Winning trainer Stuart Webb is a farrier by trade and he prepares a small string at Caulfield. “The VRC Oaks is the obvious goal but I don’t want to bottom her out,” he said. “She can develop into a very good miler and middle distance mare in the future.”
