Armidale Stud sire Telesto received a boost on the eve of the Tasmanian Magic Millions yearling sale when his daughter Huon Cry won on Hobart Cup day for owner-breeder Rex Colless.
Huon Cry (4m Telesto – Classic Grades by Honor Grades) powered her way to a brilliant first-up win in the Thorp Industries Hcp over 1100m at Tattersall’s Park. She was racing first-up since last July after winning on debut in Hobart.
“We thing she has a bright future and her times suggest that because she’s run the fastest last 600m on the day,” Colless predicted. “Darren (Gauci) was confident a long way from home and said she is good enough to win against fillies and mares in Melbourne.”
Huon Cry is by Telesto (USA) and is bred on the same Danzig cross as Armidale Stud’s colt from Dartington (Lot 101) at the Tasmanian Magic Millions next week.
Dartington (Tertian) was a Listed winner of the Tasmanian St Leger and she was also runner-up in the Listed 2001 Tasmanian Oaks. Her first foal Why For (Xaar) won 8 races and she was also runner-up in the 2008 Tasmanian Oaks.
Colless races Huon Cry with his partner Kirstin Braun and Sydney based friends Dennis Garlic, Bob Powell and Mark Greenhaugh. The mare is trained by Jason Clifford who is about to relocate to Geelong, however, there is no certainty she will become part of his Victorian team.
Telesto (Mr Prospector) has sired 50 individual winners of 112 races at a 59% strike-rate. His colt from Dartington is one of 32 lots Armidale has catalogued for the Magic Millions. The Armidale draft also includes 13 yearlings by its first season sire Helike (Rahy).
